Henry Rowe Schoolcraft’s 1853 Historical and Statistical Information volume III contains a short entry headed “Amikiminis.” It calls that the source’s “Indian name” for Beaver Island and explains the English name as a literal translation of amik (beaver) and minnis (island), joined by a connective i.
The same entry reports an 1840 island population of 199, divided in the printed account into thirty-nine men, fifty-one women, and 109 children under fourteen. This is a historical, source-specific enumeration claim—not a complete census record or an estimate of all Anishinaabe people with a relationship to the island.
Evidence and limits
Schoolcraft’s wording, spelling, translation, and demographic categories are recorded as nineteenth-century source language. They should not be treated as a modern community-preferred spelling, a definitive linguistic analysis, or a complete account of Anishinaabe/Odawa presence. The held modern Ojibwe People’s Dictionary entries provide limited lexical context, not confirmation of this historical form’s morphology or community use.
The source gives no census schedule, names, households, geographic boundary, enumeration method, or explanation of the age categories. Its 1840 count cannot be used to infer residence duration, citizenship, affiliation, land tenure, or the absence of people omitted by the source.
