Summary
This audit records a reproducible 2026 count of Fox Islands mentions across the full text held here. After exact-body deduplication, it preserves 441 matches in 126 text bodies; the audit’s conservative local-context rule marks 405 as Michigan/Beaver-local. It is evidence that the Fox Islands recur across the held record, not a substitute for source-specific historical interpretation.
Method and limits
The audit recognizes North Fox, South Fox, and generic Fox Island(s) phrasing, then removes byte-identical body duplicates. Generic references without a Michigan/Beaver cue inside the automated context window remain unresolved; they are not automatically false positives or automatically local. Alternate OCR editions can also remain separate witnesses despite the exact-body rule.
The resulting counts do not measure population, ownership, settlement, transport volume, cultural affiliation, or the number of independent historical events. A claim about any one Fox Islands activity must cite and interpret the underlying source record.
Research use
The audit provides a queryable bridge from the archipelago and its North/South Fox places to held records in newspapers, books, Chronicling America, Beaver Beacon OCR, and the public Master Plan collection. It supports cross-county research while preserving the distinction between a cultural archipelago and source-specific county, parcel, or jurisdictional coverage.
