Beaver Island History Map, 1978 revision

Summary

The vessel modeled here as LaFinire was reported in November 1886 as a total wreck on Hog Island, under the spelling Lafrinier.1 A later local retrospective describes LaFinire as a three-masted coal schooner; that identity bridge remains unverified.2

Evidence and limits

The 1886 newspaper establishes the loss of a similarly named schooner but not a complete vessel identity. Neither source gives a registry, owner, master, crew, or exact wreck point; “on Hog Island” is not silently converted into a wreck on Hog Island Reef.

Open questions

  • Can an enrollment or casualty report identify the vessel and its exact loss location?
  • Do “Lafrinier” and “LaFinire” identify one vessel, and if so, what was its registered spelling?

The contemporary report prints the vessel name “Lafrinier,” says it was wrecked on Hog Island the previous week, and calls it a total wreck. Its account of recovered gear does not identify the vessel’s registered name, rig, cargo, owner, master, or crew. No public copy of this file is known; the archive holds one and can provide it on request.
  2. Retrospective identifies the LaFinire as a three-masted schooner carrying coal that was wrecked off Hog Island in 1886.
