Summary
Lansing is Michigan’s state capital. This article is limited to Lansing’s documented ties to Beaver Island: repeated visits by Michigan state agency staff – the Department of Conservation, the State Health Department, and the Economic Development Commission – based in Lansing, the island’s state senator’s service there, and a Lansing-based Beaver Island Association that published its own newsletter. It is not a general article about the city.
History
Michigan state agencies headquartered in Lansing appear repeatedly in the Beaver Beacon through the 1950s and 1960s conducting work on the island. Department of Conservation staff from Lansing checked state lands on Hog and Garden Islands in 1955, examined deer taken during hunting season in 1958, and the department’s game and lands divisions are named in Beacon notices across the period. A State Health Department nutritionist from Lansing visited the island in October 1955 to lecture on and later begin a nutritional study of island schoolchildren. In 1956 the state’s Economic Development Commission sent a survey panel from Lansing, invited by the Beaver Island Civic Association, to assess the island’s prospects for economic development.
The island’s relationship to state government is also recorded through its elected representation: a June 1960 Beacon item describes the island’s retiring state senator as having “given a good account of himself down at Lansing.” Separately, a Lansing-based organization, the Beaver Island Association of Michigan, is recorded in October 1961 publishing its own newsletter, the Beaver Island Beam, which the Beacon welcomed as a “sister” publication.
Significance
Lansing’s tie to the island in the held record runs through state administration – conservation, public health, and economic development agencies exercising authority or offering assistance from the capital – rather than through direct institutional ties like Charlevoix’s county government or Grand Rapids’s parish clergy. The Lansing-based Beaver Island Association and its newsletter indicate an organized off-island membership group distinct from, though comparable in kind to, the Chicago Beaver Island Club.
Open questions
- No held source establishes when or why the Beaver Island Association of Michigan was founded, or its relationship, if any, to other off-island Beaver Island clubs recorded in Chicago and elsewhere.
- The full extent and outcome of the 1956 Economic Development Commission survey is not established beyond the Beacon’s notice of the visit.
