Summary

Steve Connaghan, born about 1955, is a son of Rose J. Greene Connaghan and Jack Connaghan of Beaver Island. He graduated from Beaver Island School in May 1973 and, unlike several classmates who had already committed to the Coast Guard or other plans, was still deciding his own that fall. Beacon notes through the mid-1970s place him back on the island as an active hunter.

History

A May 1958 hospital note reports “Steve Connaghan age 3” treated at Charlevoix for a ruptured appendix, naming him son of Jack and Rose Connaghan and putting his birth around 1955. The May 1973 Beacon named him among eight Beaver Island School graduates for a May 25 commencement; a June 1973 follow-up, listing classmates’ next steps (Hugh Cole to the Coast Guard, Mike Martin waiting until fall), reported that “Steve Connaghan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Connaghan, will also decide his plans in the fall.” Rather than leaving the island immediately, he appears in Beacon game and hunting notes through at least 1976: among an eleven-man rabbit-hunting party that took 51 rabbits in February 1975, and among successful deer hunters in the November 1975 and November 1976 seasons.

Evidence and limits

The identification across the 1958, 1973, and 1975–76 notices rests on repeated, matching parentage (“son of Jack and Rose Connaghan” / “son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Connaghan”) rather than a civil identity record. His younger brother Gerald Connaghan, also a son of Jack and Rose Connaghan, graduated from the same school three years later, in 1976.
