In September 1961 the Beacon’s hospital notes reported that “little Gerald Connaghan, son of Rose and Jack Connaghan, accidentally opened the door of his mother’s car while she was driving home and fell to the road.” He suffered a double skull fracture; an island visitor, Don Hanson, flew him to Charlevoix, where he was hospitalized for several days before recovering.1
Fifteen years later, in May–June 1976, the Beacon named Gerald Connaghan — son of “Mrs. Rose Connaghan” — among six graduates of Beaver Island Community School, all of whom the paper reported had been accepted to college.2 A September 1977 community note reports him returning to Michigan State University in East Lansing, matching the 1976 graduation announcement’s report that one of the six graduates would attend Michigan State.3
