Summary

Mary McDonough is identified in her daughter Clementine’s 1972 letter as the wife of Owen McCauley and mother of Clementine. She remained on Beaver Island while Owen was away with the Squaw Island light crew because she was pregnant with Clementine.1

The letter says Mary died before Owen’s September 1958 death and was buried with him in St. Joseph, but it does not give her death date or establish a complete civil identity.

Namesake

Distinct from Mary L. McDonough. That record documents Mary L. (Boyle) McDonough (1903–2000), Holy Cross Altar Society president in 1961 and treasurer in 1976, whose married name is McDonough (she married Bert McDonough) and whose parents were Daniel and Maggie Gallagher Boyle. This Mary McDonough is a different, earlier woman: McDonough was her own maiden name, she married Owen J. McCauley in 1899, and she died before September 1958 — a generation before the Altar Society officer was active. No relationship between the two is established or implied.
