Summary

Martha Guth is a Canadian-born opera singer, a granddaughter of Sand Bay resident Maureen Ratliff, whom a 2024 Northern Islander retrospective calls “world-renowned” and says “Beaver Island claims as our own” because she grew up spending summers on the island. The Beaver Beacon records her performing on the island as early as 1988, at age eleven; co-founding the Beaver Island Music Fund with Deborah Harwood around 2003; winning the 2007 Wigmore Hall / Kohn Foundation International Song Competition in London while living in New York; and returning as a recurring performer at the Baroque on Beaver festival from at least 2008 onward.

Early appearances and teaching

The earliest dated record found here is an August 1988 Beacon item naming “Martha Guth, 11 years old, and Judy Holst, 8, granddaughters of Maureen Ratliff of Sand Bay,” as having “started the evening’s entertainment” at a Music on the Porch program at the Print Shop Museum, organized by Marilyn Reed and Doris Larson — placing Guth’s birth around 1976-77 and her grandmother on the island’s own East Side.¹ A January 2003 item names “Martha’s cousin Judy” among the singers in Guth’s four-part-harmony ensemble at a Museum program, consistent with, though not confirmed identical to, the Judy Holst of 1988.²

By spring 2003 Guth taught free “Music Appreciation” and voice sessions for the Beaver Island Community School’s enrichment program, at the Peaine Township Hall and later at the Christian Church; the Beacon names her among the program’s “especially generous” contributing artists and reports students performing at the church on April 26-27.³⁴⁵ That June she directed the island’s Community Choir in a performance of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem with the Youth Choir, and performed English and American art songs, accompanied by Robert Holst, at a Summer Solstice Concert and High Tea benefiting the newly organizing Music Fund.⁶⁷ A July 2003 report on the second annual High Tea and Song Recital at Deerwood Lodge quotes Guth on the event’s origin with chef Deborah Harwood: “We decided that we wanted to do something that involved both of our work and talents… We thought of this idea to do a High Tea.”⁸ An April 2004 notice independently credits “Opera singer Martha Guth and Harwood” with establishing the Music Fund “last summer” from the High Tea and Solstice Concert proceeds, and a November 2006 report on Music Fund donations again describes the fund as “started four years ago by Deborah Harwood and Martha Guth” — corroborating a circa-2003 founding from a separate later notice.⁹¹⁰ A February 2004 profile of a student states that Guth “stayed on the Island last winter,” placing her on Beaver Island through the winter of 2003.¹¹ A 2010 festival preview recalls that she “made her Beaver Island debut many years ago at Music on the Porch” before going on to perform “throughout North America and Europe.”¹²

Career beyond Beaver Island

By August 2007 Guth was performing internationally: a community-concert report describes her arriving “direct from the Santa Fe Opera House” for a guest appearance.¹³ In January 2008 the Beacon reported that “former Island resident Martha Guth, currently living in New York,” had won the 2007 Wigmore Hall / Kohn Foundation International Song Competition in London, describing her as “the Canadian soprano” and reprinting a review of her winning recital — a program of Copland, Ravel, Poulenc, Rachmaninov, and Strauss — that called her voice “a rounded lyric soprano, without sharp edges” and praised her “perfect intonation” and “economy of physical effort.” The same report states she was a two-time previous competitor and a 2003 prize winner in the same competition.¹⁴

Festival record

The 2008 festival program lists Guth performing that August in the Community Center’s orchestral and small-ensemble concert and in the full orchestra-and-chorus concerts at Holy Cross Hall.¹⁵ The 2009 island calendar lists Guth performing at Baroque on Beaver on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of that year’s festival.¹⁶ The 2010 preview, describing her as a professional opera singer who had “thrilled Beaver Island festival audiences for the past two years,” announced she would open that season’s festival with harpsichordist Penelope Crawford and singer Claudia Schmidt at a benefit concert, and would also appear in a chamber concert, Just Among Friends, at Central Michigan University.¹² Previewing the festival’s tenth season in 2011, the Beacon reported that the opening concert would feature the world premiere of a piece commissioned from composer Tom Cipullo, based on poetry of Robert Cole, “performed by Island favorite Martha Guth,” with the Festival Orchestra directed by Robert Nordling.¹⁷ A Northern Islander retrospective on the festival’s 2024 season reports Guth featured in that year’s Founders Concert, and describes her, in the festival’s first-ever fully staged opera presentation on the island, performing alongside “her husband,” fellow opera singer Ricardo Lugo; the same account recalls that in her island youth she “‘back in the day’ sang at the much-treasured Rectory’s open mic nights.”¹⁸

Evidence and limits

The 2008-11 festival items and the 2003 High Tea report are advance or same-season publicity; the January 2008 Wigmore Hall report reprints a professional review rather than reporting independently; and the 2024 item is post-event reporting. This article keeps their evidentiary status distinct rather than treating them as equally weighted. No source held here gives Guth’s exact birth date or a complete performance history outside Beaver Island; the 1988 item’s stated age (eleven, in August 1988) narrows her birth to a roughly one-year window rather than fixing a date. The “world-renowned” and “persuasive and passionate artist” characterizations are quoted festival and newspaper description, not independently verified. Whether “Judy Holst” (1988) and “Martha’s cousin Judy” (2003) are the same person is not stated outright by either source and is treated as probable, not established, on the coincidence of the first name and the family connection through Maureen Ratliff.
