Summary

Captain L. L. Hill (c. 1872–1937) commanded the Marold II during the January 1937 gasoline-salvage explosion. A contemporary report gives his age as 65; his body was not recovered. A later local history identifies his son Leon and describes the pair as owners during an earlier stage of the vessel’s service.

Evidence and limits

The held Herald report gives conflicting ages—79 in the initial crew list and 83 in the later recovery notice—but the contemporary Associated Press report gives 65. The latter supports only the conservative circa-1872 birth year. The record does not expand the captain’s initials or assert a residence, spouse, or complete captain’s chronology.

  • What civil, maritime, or obituary record identifies L. L. Hill and resolves his age?
  • When did Hill and his son own or operate the Marold, and when did Everett Cole purchase it?
