History
The June 1972 Beaver Beacon reports that “Kevin McDonough, son of Captain and Mrs. Lawrence McDonough, received an Associates Degree in Architectural Drafting” from Ferris State College on 11 June 1972. That October the paper announced his engagement to Linda Arden, again naming him “son of Captain and Mrs. Lawrence McDonough of Beaver Island,” and describing him as “in his 3rd year at Ferris State College for Architectural Drafting” — wording that sits awkwardly against the degree reported four months earlier. The archive carries both statements rather than choosing between them.
The wedding notice of September 1973 gives his parents as “Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence M. McDonough of St. James” and names his brothers Joseph, Gary and Larry McDonough in the wedding party, with his sister Pamela. In February 1976 the Beacon announced the birth of a son: “Mr. and Mrs. Kevin McDonough (Linda Arden) announce the arrival of a son, Shane Ryan… Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence McDonough, of Charlevoix, are the happy grandparents.”

redirect here. The bridge is a converging parent-and-sibling identification
across four independent notices: a May 1964 Beacon item listing “Capt. and
Mrs. Lawrence McDonough, Gary, Kevin, Joseph, Kathy and Pam” — the same
siblings who appear in the 1973 wedding party — and the 1972, 1973 and 1976
notices above, all naming Captain Lawrence McDonough as his father.
The Kevin McDonough who captained the South Shore in 1974 is kept as a separate record. The September 1974 “Rescue at Sea” report names only “the South Shore, captained by Kevin McDonough” and supplies no parent, spouse or date. It is suggestive that Lawrence McDonough was business manager of the Beaver Island Boat Company, which operated the South Shore, and that no other adult Kevin McDonough appears in the corpus — a “Kevin Barry McDonough” who was a ringbearer in 1971 would have been a child in 1974. But suggestion is not a bridge, and this archive does not merge records on a matching name.
Open questions
- Did he complete the Ferris State degree in June 1972, or was he still in his third year that October? The two notices disagree.
- Was he the South Shore’s 1974 captain? A notice naming that captain’s parents or spouse would settle it.
- What was his later occupation and residence?
