Summary

James Gallagher was named as the later captain of the steamer Joe in the March 1973 Beaver Tales retrospective.

Evidence and limits

The source does not distinguish this James Gallagher from other island men with that name, so no existing Gallagher record is merged. The steamer Joe’s service overlapping the Eric L. Hackley (purchased 1897, holding the mail contract until 1906–1907) places this James Gallagher’s floruit around the turn of the century — earlier than James Gallagher (probably James H. Gallagher, 1883–1956, who would have been a boy or young teenager in that period), James W. “Young James” Gallagher (b. 1908), and the James Gallagher born at St. James in 1893 who moved away to Newberry in 1915. None of the four is established as this steamer captain.

Sources

  1. Says James Gallagher later sailed the steamer Joe in competition with the Eric L. Hackley; it does not establish which James Gallagher is meant or provide a complete civil identity.
