Summary

Hugh Cole, son of Donald and Lil Cole, is documented in the Beaver Beacon from a January 1960 childhood notice through a February 1986 emergency- medical-technician class. History

Childhood and school

The earliest held mention of Hugh Cole is a January 1960 notice reporting him “son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Cole,” recently treated for tonsils at Charlevoix — the source for his parents’ names, Donald Cole and, per a later 1980 notice, Lil Cole.1 He received First Holy Communion at Holy Cross Church on April 28, 1963, with five other children.2 In April 1967 the Beacon names him, with Jeff Howland, as winner of a “Uniqueness” category at an island fair or exhibit, without further description of the event.3 In May 1973 he was named among the Beaver Island School’s graduating class,4 and the following month the paper reported he “will enter the U.S. Coast Guard in August,” while classmates Mike Martin and Steve Connaghan had not yet decided their plans.5

Coast Guard service

Cole joined the Coast Guard at Cape May, New Jersey, in August 1973.6 He returned home to spend Christmas with his family in December 1973, the Beacon reported the following January, publishing a new mailing address for correspondence but no service assignment.7 He finished his tour of duty and returned to Beaver Island in September 1977; the same report notes his brother Raymond had also returned, after graduating from Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, and that the two brothers were living together and working with their father in the family’s commercial fishing business.8

Fishing, family, and community life

By February 1978 Cole was established enough on the island to be named among a group — Joe McDonough, Hugh Cole, and Chip Bayne — who walked to High Island and back.9 An April 1980 account of a house fire at the neighboring Harmon residence identifies “Hugh Cole’s” house as standing only about 16 1/2 feet away, close enough that Beaver Island firefighters had to wet it down through the worst of the blaze; the report does not describe Cole himself as a firefighter in this instance.10 That August, Cole married Gay Works, daughter of John and Trudy Works, in Charlevoix on August 1, 1980, with a reception at Ann Hayhoe’s.11 By January 1982 he was named among the personnel of Island Homes, Inc., a firm advertising “all phases of design and construction,” though the source does not specify his role.12

Civic and emergency service

Through the 1980s Cole recurs in the Beacon as a volunteer across several island institutions. In February 1984 he was named to a Beaver Island Game Club committee reviewing the club’s by-laws.13 By June 1984 he appears on the roster of the island’s “official firefighters” under Chief Tim McDonough, part of the volunteer department organized in 1961.14 That July he helped with a harbor and townsite beautification project, raking the playground with a group led by Kitty McNamara.15 In February 1986 he was one of up to twelve trainees completing an 80-hour emergency medical technician class, organized with District III Health Department coordinator John LaMont and supported by the island’s medical and fire auxiliaries, held in Beaver Island Community School classrooms.16 That December he served as a Bingo caller for a Fire Department Auxiliary fundraiser.17 No source read for this article documents Cole beyond 1986.

Evidence and limits

This record spans 1960 to 1986 across sixteen held Beaver Beacon issues (merged from a separately seeded 1960 hospital-notice record that cited the same January 1960 tonsillectomy notice used here), all identifying a single Hugh Cole, son of Donald and Lil Cole, consistently by family, school, service, and civic association; no second Hugh Cole appears in the corpus searched for this article. The record establishes a school career, a Coast Guard enlistment and return, a marriage, and repeated volunteer service, but not a complete military record (rank, ship or station assignments, discharge date), a complete work history, or children. Several later Beacon “years ago” retrospective columns (2003, 2007, 2008, 2010) repeat facts from the primary notices cited here rather than adding new ones; they are not cited separately where they add nothing beyond corroboration.

Significance

Cole’s record illustrates a pattern common on the island: a Coast Guard enlistment out of high school, a return to the family fishing trade, and years of unpaid service to the volunteer fire department, game club, and emergency medical service that keep a small island functioning. No single source states this pattern explicitly; it is this article’s synthesis of the sixteen notices read, not a claim made by any one of them.
