Summary
Edward Palmer (1946–2021) was one of ten children of Beaver Island farmer and Great Lakes sailor Clarence G. Palmer and Lorraine Boyle Palmer. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam in 1965–66, later held elected and appointed local office, and was, across more than four decades of Beaver Beacon notices from 1961 to at least 2005, the island’s most consistently documented dance and wedding musician.
History
Family, school years, and military service
The June 1961 class report names Edward Palmer as a piano player, alongside guitarist Tony McDonough and vocalist Lorraine Palmer, at the Beaver Island class dance party. A January 1963 holiday-visitors notice lists “Perry and Edward Palmer” among islanders who returned to be with their families over the holidays, consistent with his being away from the island — at school or early work — by that date. In February 1965 he was named among the crew, led by Charlie Martin, that cut and stored lake ice for the island’s first such harvest since 1956, alongside his brothers Perry and Robert. In March 1965 the Beacon’s “Service Mens News” reported a new military address for Edward Palmer, “who recently became one of Uncle Sam’s boys,” identifying him again as the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Palmer. By October 1965 he had arrived in Vietnam, serving with the 54th Aviation Company; a November 1966 notice reported that he had returned to the United States and, following his Army discharge, would return to the island on November 19. In January 1968 he was a brief patient at Little Traverse Hospital, again identified as Clarence Palmer’s son, and was “at home on the Island” afterward. In February 1977 he was among a party, led by Charlie Martin, that made a snowmobile trip to Naubinway in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Family life
On October 13, 1973, at his sister Mary Ann Palmer’s wedding to Roger Dale Ferguson in Petoskey, “Ed Palmer, brother of the bride, escorted her to the altar.” Clarence Palmer’s July 1976 obituary — he died June 29, 1976, at 73, a World War II veteran born at Northport in 1902 — lists Edward among four sons, Perry J., Edward, and Robert of St. James and Russell of Ludington, and six daughters. In January 1978 a birth notice reported that Mr. and Mrs. Edward Palmer had a daughter, Tara Marie, born December 7, 1977, with Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Gillespie and Mrs. Lorraine Palmer named as grandparents; the notice does not give the name of Edward Palmer’s wife. A 2005 anniversary notice names “Edward’s daughter Hillary” as a singer, identifying a second daughter not named in 1978.
Township and Medical Center service
In April 1975 he was hired for St. James Township under the Comprehensive Employment Training Program (C.E.J.A.), alongside John DeVogel for Peaine Township. By September 1977 a notice reported that Herb Fleishman had been named to fill the unexpired St. James Township trustee term of Edward Palmer, who had resigned — and, in the same item, that Edward Palmer had been named to fill the unexpired Peaine Township trustee term of Stanley Floyd. The notice does not explain how the same man appears resigning from one township board and joining another in a single announcement; this is recorded as the source states it, without resolution. By April 1979 he was a member of the Beaver Island Medical Center board, chaired by John Gillespie; an April 1985 township-board motion reappointed him to the Medical Center board, as a community-member representative, for a two-year term.
Island musician, 1961–2005
Beyond the 1961 class dance, Palmer appears repeatedly across the held Beacon run as a working musician at island social occasions: the 1972 Homecoming Dance, where he played with Lorraine and Irene Palmer and Chucky Dudley before roughly 130 people; St. Patrick’s Day dances and Homecoming dances through the late 1970s and 1980s alongside Jewell Gillespie, Danny Gillespie, Rich Scripps, Richie Gillespie, and other recurring island players; the 1979 fortieth-year McDonough family reunion and a class reunion the same season; and Medical Center and Township-adjacent community events. The pattern continues into the next century: an October 2002 wedding reception and a July 2005 fiftieth-wedding-anniversary celebration — at which his daughter Hillary sang — both name him among the musicians, showing him still performing more than four decades after the 1961 notice that first names him.
Significance
No single held source gives Edward Palmer a formal occupation, but the accumulated record — sixteen sources spanning 1961 to 2005 — documents an islander whose public life ran through the community’s recreational, civic, and medical institutions simultaneously: a Vietnam-era veteran, a township trustee on two boards in short succession, a two-term Medical Center board member, and, most consistently of all, the musician whose name recurs at island dances, weddings, and reunions across more than four decades.
Evidence and limits
The 1968 hospital notice’s parent identification, echoed in the 1973 wedding report and the 1976 obituary, links these episodes to the same Edward Palmer and to the Holy Cross Cemetery entry for Edward Palmer (1946–2021), son of Clarence and Lorraine Boyle Palmer. No source read for this article gives Edward Palmer’s own civilian occupation, the name of his wife, or a residence outside Beaver Island after 1975. The September 1977 township-officer notice is reproduced as printed even though it appears internally inconsistent; no later issue read for this article corrects or explains it. The musical appearances listed above are a sample of recurring notices, not an exhaustive count of every performance in the held corpus.
