Charles S. “Harry” Moore was identified by an October 1929 notice as the engineer of the Charlevoix–Beaver Island mail boat James B. Sanford. The same notice reports that he was injured at Beaver Island by a boy on a bicycle and died at Charlevoix Hospital on October 16, 1929.

Evidence and limits

The same issue’s state-news brief calls the person killed in the Beaver Island bicycle accident Charles S. Moore, age 60. The accident, the place, and the death are the same, which is enough to keep Charles S. and Harry as aliases and to derive a circa-1869 birth year. The brief still gives no specific birth date, no parents, no wife, and no Manistee burial location. It calls the boat James B. Sanford, while the 1926 notices and the 1968 retrospective use James E. Sanford; the vessel article preserves that discrepancy. Other later Harry Moore mentions are not merged here.

Open questions

  • Can a death certificate, funeral notice, or Manistee cemetery record identify Moore fully?
  • What earlier report documents the Beaver Island injury?
  • Was the 1929 boat name a typographical variant of James E. Sanford?
