Summary

Dalwhinnie Bakery & Deli is a bakery, delicatessen and coffee house beside McDonough’s Market on Michigan Avenue in Saint James. The Beaver Beacon reports a purpose-built 2,400-square-foot building going up through the winter of 1996–97 and a grand opening on 21 June 1997, under the tagline “the meeting place.” It was run together with the market from the start. The premises now house the Wild Strawberry Cafe.

History

In November 1996 the Beacon reported construction underway on “the new Dalwhinnie Deli/Bakery,” built by Gary Damstra, and noted the effect on the settlement’s geography: the tourist’s question “Where’s McDonough’s Market?” would now be answered “It’s just north of Dalwhinnie.”¹ The building is given as 2,400 square feet.

Advertising began that April, promising “Fresh Bakery & Deli Treats as well as Espresso, Cappuccino, Specialty Coffees, Ice Cream and Pizza,” and placing the business “on the Harbor of Beaver Island.”² In May the same issue that carried a hiring notice — applications taken “for Dalwhinnie Bakery and McDonough’s Market,” both through the market’s own address at 38240 Michigan Avenue — also profiled the baker: John, who after “36 years working in education as a teacher and administrator” had made his “most recent career move” to baker for Dalwhinnie.³ The grand opening followed on Saturday 21 June 1997.⁴

Through the rest of that year the house advertised monthly as “Dalwhinnie — The meeting place,” over a line drawing of a two-storey building with a porch.⁴⁵

Names and dates

The founding year is contested between two kinds of source. The Beacon’s account is contemporaneous and circumstantial — a named builder, a floor area, a construction season, coming-soon advertising, and a dated grand opening in 1997. The market’s own retrospective timeline instead places a “Dalwhinnie grand opening” in 1985, in the same entry as a “New Store grand opening” and a “major addition.”⁶ Both are recorded. The most economical reading is that a deli counter inside the enlarged market of 1985 was later given its own building in 1997, but no held source says so, and this record does not adopt it.

The premises

The building was put up for this business rather than adapted to it, which makes it unusual among the settlement’s commercial premises: most, like the Shamrock, are older than the trade they now carry. It stands immediately south of McDonough’s Market on Michigan Avenue and was described in 1997 advertising as on the harbour.¹²

Evidence and limits

Premises and business are carried on one page because the held record describes the building only through the business that commissioned it — a builder’s name, a floor area and a facade drawing. No deed, licence, or plan has been consulted, and no proprietor is securely named: the December 1997 advertisement is headed “Bill & Jimmy Ship,” which is not explained and is not treated here as a statement of ownership. The held Beacon run ends in 2014. A 2021 forum thread correcting a rumour that Dalwhinnie had closed is the latest held indication of its trading. Whether it still trades under this name in 2026 is not established: its listing on the chamber’s site gives no status, and the premises at 38240 Michigan Avenue are now given by the Wild Strawberry Cafe as its own address.
