Summary

On April 2, 1963, the Coast Guard vessel Sundew reached Beaver Island after breaking ice for ten hours from Charlevoix. It delivered five tons of hay and several bags of grain for the Jordan River Ranch’s 85 Herefords, stayed overnight, and returned through a newly shifted ice field in eight hours.

Evidence and limits

This is a local newspaper account of a supply run. It does not provide a Coast Guard log, official vessel identifier, cargo manifest, or independent weather and ice measurements.

Open questions

  • Can Coast Guard logs or ranch records confirm the cargo, route, and timing?
