Summary

Bite of Beaver Island is an October food-sampling festival organized by the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce, first held October 5, 2002 on the Convent lawn as a one-day tasting event where island chefs and restaurants sold small, low-priced portions of their food. It grew quickly into a weekend fixture pairing a food expo — long held at Holy Cross Parish Hall, later with Community Center overflow — with a companion road race, the “Island Boodle” (added in its second year, 2003), and, from 2007-2008, an Apple Pie Contest, a Harvest Dessert Contest, a school poster contest, and a bike ride.

Held Beaver Beacon coverage documents the event continuously from its 2002 founding through 2011 (64 issues). A 2025 Chamber annual report describes a new companion event, “Harvest on the Harbor,” created to “expand on” Bite of Beaver Island — but the Chamber’s own 2026 master calendar no longer lists “Bite of Beaver Island” by that name, instead showing a June “Beaver Island Boodle” and an October “Harvest on the Harbor.” Whether the event was renamed, folded into Harvest on the Harbor, discontinued, or is simply absent from that particular calendar page is not established by any single held or web-researched source, and is recorded below as an open question.

Origins

The event was founded in 2002 by the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce. Chef Deborah Harwood coordinated the first “Bite of Beaver Island,” held October 5, 2002 from 4 to 7 p.m. on the Convent lawn, with Chamber Director Steve West handling marketing.1 Harwood said she modeled it on a similar event she had taken part in some years earlier in Bozeman, Montana, and West called it “this ‘prototype event’” with “great upside potential,” stating the Chamber’s intent to make it “an annual fall event.”1 The November 2002 recap reports the first Bite of Beaver drew almost 300 people and was, in Harwood’s words, “a great success.”2

Organization

Every held year attributes Bite of Beaver Island to the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce. Chef Deborah Harwood coordinated the earliest years, crediting Gail and Mike Weede as early co-organizers in 2003.3 Chamber Director Steve West is named as organizer in coverage through at least 2008.4 By 2018-2021 the event had its own Chamber committee, co-chaired by Frank D’Andraia and MaryJean Pike.5

Venues

The first Bite of Beaver was held on the Convent lawn in 2002.1 By the mid-2000s the food expo’s traditional site was Holy Cross Parish Hall, and the 2007 event added a second location — a tent near the Chamber office and the Municipal Marina — alongside it.6 By 2008 the Beaver Island Community Center was also used for overflow tables.4 The Island Boodle road race has registered and started from the Shamrock (2007) and, per a later web-only Chamber description, from the Beaver Island Community Center (undated, content dated to a 2019 listing).67 McCafferty’s Equestrian Center hosted an associated 2003 Barn Dance.8

Every year with held Beaver Beacon evidence — 2002 through 2011 — now has an edition article. The 2012-2023 corpus hole and 2024 remain unwritten. Beacon counts are the number of held Beaver Beacon issues that year mentioning “Bite of Beaver.”

Recurring elements documented across the held years: a food-tasting expo with $5-and-under tastes from island chefs, restaurants, and amateur cooks; the Island Boodle 5K run/walk (from 2003); an Apple Pie Contest with auction (from 2007); a Harvest Dessert Contest (from 2008); a Beaver Island Community School student poster contest (from 2008); and live music, including L.D. Ryan (2002 and 2003) and Brenda LeFevre (2003). Named organizers across the held record are Deborah Harwood (founding coordinator), Steve West (Chamber Director/organizer), Gail and Mike Weede (thanked as early organizers, 2003), and Frank D’Andraia and MaryJean Pike (committee co-chairs, 2018-2021).1345 No participant is recorded here with a structured role, since no Person-type articles for these individuals exist yet in the knowledge base; they are named in prose only, attributed to the sources above.

Community and economic context

The 2002 founding coverage frames the event explicitly as an attempt to extend the tourist season into the fall.1 The 2003 recap credits it with drawing “a surprising number of off-Islanders,” including a couple who travelled from Traverse City specifically for the event.2 By 2007 the Island Boodle’s race proceeds were benefiting the Beaver Island Sports Boosters club.6 The event’s continued use as a fundraising venue for other island groups is attested as late as 2024, when a Wellness Gardeners history lists “Bite of Beaver booth sales” among its regular fundraising channels.9

Coverage and evidence limits

Held Beaver Beacon coverage of Bite of Beaver Island runs from its October 2002 founding through 2011 (64 issues: 2002 (2), 2003 (6), 2004 (4), 2005 (6), 2006 (7), 2007 (11), 2008 (11), 2009 (4), 2010 (10), 2011 (3)). Several Charlevoix Courier bound-volume scans (2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009) independently corroborate specific “Nth annual” editions; these are raw ProQuest microform OCR with one word per line and frequent character-recognition errors, so citations from them are limited to short phrases that were re-verified by joining the wrapped lines and re-reading the surrounding text, not treated as clean prose. 2012-2023 is a hole with no held periodical for this island. The only 2024 mention held is a passing reference in an unrelated organization’s fundraising history, not a description of a 2024 edition; no article here claims the event ran, under its original name, in 2024, 2025, or 2026.

Open questions

  • Is Bite of Beaver Island a revival or descendant of the Chamber’s “Taste of Beaver Island”? The March 1989 Beacon’s season calendar lists “Taste of Beaver Island, August 18 & 19” among the new Chamber of Commerce’s first-year events, and the event recurs in held issues through the late 1990s (including at the October Fly-In in 1997–1998). Yet the October 2002 Beacon presents Bite of Beaver Island as “the first ever event of its kind on the Island.” Whether the 2002 organizers considered the 1989–1990s Taste a different kind of event, had forgotten it, or were advertising loosely is not settled by any held source; see Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce for the Taste record.
  • Has Bite of Beaver Island been renamed, absorbed, or discontinued? The Chamber’s own March 2025 annual report describes “Harvest on the Harbor (HOTH)” as a new event created “to expand on the existing ‘Bite of Beaver Island’ event,” implying Bite of Beaver Island still existed alongside it as of that writing. But the Chamber’s 2026 master calendar (beaverisland.org/events-new/, accessed 3 August 2026) does not list “Bite of Beaver Island” by name at all — it shows a June “Beaver Island Boodle” (5K/10K) and an October “Harvest on the Harbor” (restaurant specials, sidewalk sales) as the current fall-season fixtures. This knowledge base does not resolve whether Bite of Beaver Island was folded into Harvest on the Harbor, quietly discontinued, or simply omitted from that particular calendar page; no held periodical covers 2012-2026 in enough depth to settle it.
  • When, precisely, did the Island Boodle road race move from its October date (paired with Bite of Beaver, 2003-2008 held evidence) to a June date (per the 2026 Chamber calendar)? No source held here documents that change directly.
  • Did Bite of Beaver Island run in every year 2012-2023? No held periodical covers this island for that span; the only surviving thread is the 2024 Wellness Gardeners mention of ongoing “Bite of Beaver booth sales,” which does not by itself confirm a full annual festival continued under that name.
