Summary
The January 1990 Beaver Beacon reprinted Ann Woodward’s “High Island Childhood—A Boy’s Life with the House of David,” an account of Walter Ramon Nelson’s life in the House of David colony around 1925. It describes communal living, food, work, the isolated school, winter recreation, and the colony’s decline and eventual departure from High Island.
Evidence limits
This is a retrospective historical account reprinted from the March–April 1989 issue of Michigan History; it is not a contemporaneous diary or independently verified census of the High Island colony.
