Summary

The January 26, 1990 Beaver Beacon reprinted a March 1966 account of Beaver Island’s historic ice mail carriers. The article describes horse-and- sleigh routes and on-foot crossings to Cross Village and Mackinaw City, with stories of pressure ridges, thin ice, and winter hazards.

Evidence limits

This is a later reprint of a 1966 newspaper article, itself a retrospective account. It should not be treated as a contemporaneous log of every mail trip.
