Summary

After the 1963 deer season, Frank Neer and Frank O’Donnell reported deer that had broken through the ice at Barney’s Lake. Volunteers organized with planks and rope, but the two deer described in the report had drowned by the time they were reached; tracks suggested that two other deer escaped.

Evidence and limits

The incident is a local newspaper account. It does not provide an exact date, wildlife incident report, or independent count of the deer.

Open questions

  • Can Conservation Department or witness records establish the date and number of deer involved?
