Summary

In a 1895 sketch of Frederic Baraga, Chrysostom Verwyst presents a first-person account of an early Beaver Island mission visit. The account describes eight bark huts, a council with the chief, and the baptism of 22 people on May 11; the surrounding chronological narrative places the visit in 1832.

The page is valuable as an early published transmission of Baraga material, but it is not the original journal, a mission register, or an Anishinaabe account. The account gives no names for the chief, the people baptized, or the earlier Beaver Island convert, and it cannot establish the island’s complete population, religious affiliation, village location, or a full chronology of Catholic life.
