Summary
Jackson Kemper’s 15 July 1834 diary entry describes leaving Mackinac by vessel for Green Bay. After passing a floating vessel used as a light and entering what the diary calls Michigan Bay, it records: “Saw Beaver island &c.” This is an early dated travel-route sighting and a source-specific singular-form name attestation.
The entry is not a survey, a landing account, or a description of Beaver Island. It should not be used to reconstruct the vessel’s exact course, infer local occupancy or infrastructure, or define the boundaries of a modern or historical archipelago.

- Printed page image checked. After departing Mackinac for Green Bay, the journal says the vessel passed a floating light, entered Michigan Bay, and “Saw Beaver island &c.” The printed diary sequence dates the entry July 15, 1834. This supports a dated route-side sighting and the source’s singular name form only; it does not establish a landing, an exact position, an island condition, a navigational route specification, or a boundary for the archipelago.
