Summary

Violet was a tug serving the Beaver Island mail route in the first decade of the twentieth century. A July 1909 Herald report says it rescued Kenneth Gallagher and Bertrand McDonough after their raft drifted offshore. A held January 1909 scrapbook reprint identifies Violet as a Charlevoix mail tug owned by R. Beutel Co.

Evidence and limits

The held sources establish the vessel name, type, mail-service context, and two episodes of Beaver Island service. They do not establish an official number, dimensions, construction, complete service history, or final disposition. The owner is retained in source prose rather than linked to an organization record because no corresponding organization article is currently supported.

Open questions

  • Can enrollment, inspection, or company records establish the tug’s official number and dimensions?
  • Was the 1909 Violet the same vessel documented in later Beaver Island mail-service reports?
  • What became of the tug after its mail and rescue service?

Sources

  1. Charlevoix County Herald, July 3, 1909, “Adrift on a Raft.”
The report says the Violet effected the Saturday rescue of Kenneth Gallagher and Bertrand McDonough after their raft drifted offshore. No public copy of this file is known; the archive holds one and can provide it on request.
  2. Charlevoix Sentinel, January 28, 1909, reprinted in the 2002 Charlevoix Courier scrapbook.
The earlier report identifies Violet as a mail tug hailing from Charlevoix, names R. Beutel Co. as owner, and records its Beaver Island route; those owner and crew claims are not promoted to separate entities here. No public copy of this file is known; the archive holds one and can provide it on request.
