Summary
The steamer Panther went ashore near Beaver Island in November 1910. A National Register nomination for the salvage barge Advance, citing a contemporary June 1911 newspaper, records that Advance removed coal from the stranded steamer and that Leathem & Smith later purchased and released it.
History Map correction
The 1978 History Map prints Panther with a dagger and the year 1910. Whatever the mapmakers intended by that symbol, 1910 cannot be the vessel’s terminal loss year: the documented 1911 salvage and release show that the Beaver Island event was a stranding. No exact wreck point is adopted from the map, and this article does not assign a later final-loss date without the vessel enrollment and casualty record.
Open questions
- What official number, build history, owner, master, and cargo identify this Panther?
- Which contemporary November 1910 report gives the grounding date and place?
- What later casualty ended the vessel’s career?
Sources
- The federal nomination cites the contemporary *Door County Democrat* of 23 June 1911 for the barge Advance removing coal from Panther. It says Panther had gone ashore near Beaver Island the preceding November and was later purchased and released by Leathem & Smith. The form is a modern evidentiary synthesis rather than the underlying newspaper, but its cited sequence demonstrates that 1910 was a stranding, not the vessel's final loss.research · beaver_island_history_map_1978 · primary_sources · panther-nrhp-nps
- Described in this archive: Beaver Island History Map, 1978 revision.Prints “Panther” with a dagger and 1910 near Beaver Island. The dagger is misleading if read as a total-loss symbol because the vessel was released after salvage in 1911.
