Summary

Cloud Nine Cabins was a Beaver Island cabin group on Sand Bay, reported in January 1971 as formerly known as McDonough’s Cabins. The source says the group was then owned by Franklin Douglas of Kalamazoo and included a small log cabin nearest the East Side Road. Later classified notices describe two cabins with 62 feet of lake frontage and 555.7 feet of depth.

Evidence and limits

The article reports the loss of one cabin, not the destruction of the entire group. Sand Bay is established by the 1968 and 1975 notices, but the exact parcel and shoreline position remain unknown. The map point is therefore the GNIS Sand Bay point, not a surveyed cabin location. The sources also do not establish construction dates, parcel history, or the status of the remaining cabins.

Open questions

  • Where was the Cloud Nine group located, and does any part survive?
  • What records connect the earlier McDonough’s Cabins name to the property?
  • Was the burned cabin rebuilt or replaced?

  1. A former visitor identified a primitive cabin rented from the McDonough family in the early 1960s as being on Sand Bay near the Jordan River, and another participant said it had later been replaced by a newer house that was still rented. This first-person recollection supports the McDonough/Sand Bay lodging association and suggests a later replacement, but it does not identify a parcel, prove that the cabin was part of the Cloud Nine group, or establish the replacement date or ownership.

  2. Reports that the small log cabin nearest the East Side Road in the Cloud Nine Cabin group burned to the ground on November 24, and says the group was formerly known as McDonough’s Cabins and was then owned by Franklin Douglas of Kalamazoo; it gives no construction, parcel, or surviving-building record.

  4. Identifies Cloud Nine Cabins as McDonough’s Sand Bay Cabins and says Edna and Franklin Douglas owned them; it does not identify a parcel or exact address.
  5. Repeated notices identify Cloud Nine Log Cabins on Sand Bay and describe two cabins with 62 feet of lake frontage and 555.7 feet of depth; they do not identify the parcel or exact shoreline position. The holding institution's portal restricts automated access; the archive holds a copy of this issue and can provide it on request.
  6. The coordinate is the GNIS point for Sand Bay, used only as a representative area locator because the cabin-group sources establish Sand Bay but not the property’s parcel or exact frontage.
