Summary

Detroit is a Michigan city on the Detroit River. This article is limited to Detroit’s documented ties to Beaver Island: mainland newspaper coverage by the Detroit News and, in one held case, the Detroit Free Press; a Detroit hospital used by island-connected families for childbirth and medical care; the Detroit medical training of an island resident physician; and a Detroit American Legion post that funded the island’s war memorial. It is not a general article about the city.

History

The Detroit Free Press is the source of the earliest identified mainland newspaper account of the island held in this archive, an article datelined about 1896 describing the archipelago’s recent annexation into Charlevoix County (see Charlevoix); the Beaver Beacon reprinted it twice, in February 1962 and April 1990. In the 1950s the Detroit News covered the island directly: in November 1956 two Detroit News reporters, Russ Harris and James “Scotty” Kilpatrick, visited the island as guests of newly arrived resident physician Dr. Frank Luton, and in 1958 the paper ran a photograph of Dr. Luton aboard a Coast Guard helicopter during a Lake Michigan vessel disaster search.

Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit appears repeatedly in Beacon birth and medical notices through the 1950s as a facility used by island families, including a January 1956 birth notice and a 1957 birth to a couple who had married on the island. Dr. Luton himself had received his M.D. in 1901 from the Michigan College of Medicine and Surgery in Detroit before beginning his practice on the island in October 1956.

Detroit also has an institutional tie to the island’s war memorial: the James Francis Neer American Legion Post of Detroit, through its first commander Frank Hall, obtained and gave the island the outdoor Blessed Virgin memorial dedicated at Holy Cross Church on 6 July 1958, honoring six Beaver Island war dead. The Beacon records that “many Island boys are still members of that Post,” indicating an ongoing membership tie between island veterans and the Detroit post rather than a one-time gift.

Significance

Detroit’s ties to the island in the held record are narrower and more varied than Charlevoix’s: press coverage, a hospital used alongside Charlevoix’s and Petoskey’s, and a single but substantial memorial gift tied to veteran membership. No held source documents a governmental, judicial, or postal relationship between Detroit and the island comparable to Charlevoix’s.
