History

The May 1960 Beaver Beacon (“Boat Owner Rejoice”) names “Professor Walker Hill of East Lansing” in an arrangement to construct a boat-storage and service marina with winter automobile storage on the island, tied to the marina proposal with Philip Gregg. That December, the Beacon’s “New Property Owners” notice reports “Prof. Walker H. Hill” purchasing the Carl Felix Motel, giving a winter address that is not repeated here as contact information. The following June, the Beacon’s island-news column identifies “Walker H. Hill” as a Beaver Island property owner elected commander of the Lansing Power Squadron on May 5, 1961.

Significance

An out-of-state property owner and would-be marina developer, illustrating the postwar wave of mainland Michigan buyers (many Lansing-area, several academics) acquiring Beaver Island real estate and motel/marina businesses.

Evidence and limits

The 1960 marina developer, the 1960 motel buyer, and the 1961 Power Squadron commander are treated as one man. The bridge is the exact “Walker H. Hill” name with middle initial (used in both the December 1960 and June 1961 notices), the shared Lansing-area residence (East Lansing in May 1960; Lansing Power Squadron commander in 1961), and continuity of Beaver Island property ownership across the narrow six-month-to-one-year span between the December 1960 motel purchase and the June 1961 notice, which itself identifies him as “a Beaver Island property owner.” No source states outright that these are one man, but no source suggests two different Walker Hills were simultaneously buying island property and holding Lansing-area maritime office in this period either.

Not necessarily the same man as Walker Hill, a Walker Hill who performed in the Beaver Island Players’ August 1973 production of Plaza Suite. That notice supplies no middle initial, occupation, or property reference — nothing beyond the bare name and the play — so while a long-term island property owner appearing in a community production twelve years later is plausible, appearing in the same small community is not itself an identity bridge here.
