Summary

Musette (Belfy) LaFreniere — daughter of Erwin E. Belfy, Sr., of Charlevoix, and maternal granddaughter of Capt. Charles C. Allers — ran a souvenir shop on the Beaver Island harbor from 1956 and was a leading figure in the Beaver Island Civic Association, the Holy Cross Altar Society, and the island’s fundraising for its Historical Society and its Holy Cross Cemetery through the late 1950s and early 1960s. During the search following the November 1958 sinking of the SS Carl D. Bradley, she relayed radio messages between a searching aircraft and the Coast Guard from her store’s telephone. Beacon and Charlevoix Courier notices place her married to Vernon “Dick” LaFreniere from about 1937, with three sons — Paul, Jerry (Gerald), and Leon — and, from at least 1966, living separately in Charlevoix while Dick remained on Beaver Island. Two of her sons’ own obituaries, printed in 1991 and 2008, name her as their mother; other 1970s Beaver Island sources instead name a different wife, Jean, for Dick during the same period — a contest this article carries without resolving (see Jean LaFreniere). She worked later as a nurse’s aide at Charlevoix Area Hospital, retiring by 1981, and died before October 2001.

History

Storekeeper and early civic work, 1955-1958

The earliest dated Beacon mention found in this research credits Musette LaFreniere with “devoting a great deal of time and energy” to a 1955 Civic Association project planting Floribunda roses as a proposed island flower.1 By June 1956 she operated “Musette’s Souvenirs,” a shop in the former lunch-room building opposite the dock, which the following month was selling reprints of the last issue of Strang’s Northern Islander to benefit the Historical Society.2 That November, the Civic Association board named her, as sitting vice president, to serve as acting chairman until the February election, following vacancies left by Dr. Vail and Art Johnston.3 In December she organized a raffle that funded a television set for the Dominican Sisters.4 The March 1957 board elections named her chair of the Commerce Committee.5 That October, major surgery at University Hospital in Ann Arbor kept her off the island; the Beacon called her “a very active member of the Beacon Committee” and said the paper “missed a lot by her absence.”6 She stood as a Civic Association board candidate in January 1958, and the following month was elected president of the Holy Cross Altar Society.7

The Bradley search, November 1958

When the freighter Carl D. Bradley sank in Lake Michigan on November 18, 1958, pilot Don Hansen spent about seven hours searching from the air for bodies near the wreck site west of Gull Island. He radioed his findings by aircraft unicom to Musette LaFreniere at her store, who telephoned the local Coast Guard station, which relayed the messages by radio to the Coast Guard’s search vessels.8 The Civic Association separately raised nearly $100 for the families of the Bradley’s crew.8

Marriage, family, and continued civic work, 1959-1962

A March 1959 Beacon item places Dick and Musette LaFreniere’s marriage at “22 years of Wedded Bliss” as of about February 7 — consistent with the Beacon’s later report of a 25th anniversary on March 3, 1962, and placing the marriage circa 1937.9 Between late 1961 and April 1962, she worked with Betty Lockton and Bob Delaney to raise funds for the care of Holy Cross Cemetery.10 That June, a Beacon item credited “Dick and Musette” with funding the airport’s Unicom radio out of their own pocket for several years, thanking a visiting pilot who paid for a repair; by September, the Historical Society thanked her for turning over $31.25 from that summer’s Northern Islander sales.1112 In April 1962 she was flown to Charlevoix Hospital with pneumonia and pleurisy, recovering at her parents’ Charlevoix home.13

Later years in Charlevoix

An August 1964 servicemen’s item names “Jerry LaFreniere, son of Musette and Vernon LaFreniere,” directly identifying her as his mother.14 By March 1966, a Beacon item reports Paul LaFreniere visiting “his mother, Musette LaFreniere, and his brother, Leon, in Charlevoix,” separately from “his father, Vernon, on Beaver Island” — the earliest source read here placing the couple at separate addresses.15 The following month she was a Charlevoix Hospital patient, the last dated Beaver Beacon mention of her found in this research.16 Charlevoix Courier notices from 1970, 1973, and 1974 consistently list her as “Mrs. Musette LaFreniere of Charlevoix,” at times naming “Vernon LaFreniere of St. James” separately rather than jointly as husband and wife, and record her visiting with her parents, Erwin E. and Lenore (Allers) Belfy, into 1973.171819 Her father’s obituary, printed in January 1975, again names her “Mrs. Musette LaFreniere, of Charlevoix,” as his surviving daughter.20 A 1981 Courier item names her among Charlevoix Area Hospital employees recently retired as a nurse’s aide.21

Sons’ obituaries and death

Two of her sons’ own obituaries independently name her as their mother using the form “Musette (Belfy) LaFreniere”: Paul LaFreniere’s, printed in the Charlevoix Courier in 1991, and Gerald “Jerry” LaFreniere’s, printed in 2008.2223 Neither obituary names a different mother or mentions Jean. A 2001 Courier obituary for her brother, Erwin C. “Sonny” Belfy, states that he “was preceded in death by his brothers, Chester and Robert Belfy, and his sister Musette La Freniere” — placing her death before October 25, 2001, without giving her own date or place of burial.24

Significance

Musette LaFreniere is documented across four decades of Beaver Island and Charlevoix newspaper notices as a Civic Association officer, Historical Society fundraiser, Altar Society president, and shopkeeper, and as a named participant in the community’s response to one of the Great Lakes’ worst shipping disasters, the sinking of the Carl D. Bradley.

Evidence and limits

The 1962 anniversary notice, and the 1991 and 2008 obituaries of two of her sons, are the sources that most directly pair her with Vernon “Dick” LaFreniere as husband and wife. A June 1972 hospital note and an unrelated April 1974 obituary instead name Dick’s wife at that time as Jean, born a Zeitler (see Vernon Hugh "Dick" LaFreniere and Jean LaFreniere). Whether Musette and Dick divorced, separated informally, or one identification is simply mistaken is not resolved by the sources read for this article; several 1966-1974 items placing her in Charlevoix and him on Beaver Island are consistent with an informal separation but do not state one directly. No source read here gives her birth date, exact death date, place of burial, or an independent civil or business record for “Musette’s Souvenirs.”

Open questions

  • What became of Musette LaFreniere between her 1981 hospital retirement and her death, which a relative’s obituary bounds only to before October 2001?
  • Did Musette and Dick LaFreniere divorce, separate informally, or does the “Jean” identification found in 1970s island sources rest on an error? No source read here resolves it.
  • Does the Holy Cross Cemetery index, or a Charlevoix-area cemetery index, carry a Musette Belfy LaFreniere entry with dates?
