Summary

Mary Gallagher McCauley is identified in Clementine McCauley’s 1972 family accounts as the daughter of James Napper Tandy Gallagher and the woman remembered as Clementine’s grandmother. The March account also places a Mary Gallagher with Conal McCauley in the Arranmore-to-Canada-to-Beaver Island migration chain.

The Holy Cross directory independently records Mary as 1836–1919, wife of Conn McCauley, and daughter of James Napper Tandy and Catherine “Kitty” Gallagher. Those years are recorded here as years, the family identity stays attributed to its sources, and she is not merged with other Beaver Island women named Mary Gallagher or Mary McDonough.

History

Clementine McCauley’s March 1972 letter dates the family’s departure from Arranmore to the 1847–48 famine years and says her grandparents, Mary Gallagher and Conal McCauley, married in Toronto after reaching Canada. Mary was, by this account, pregnant with the couple’s oldest son, Frank, when the family’s chartered vessel reached Beaver Island about three months after the Mormon settlement had emptied out — making Frank “the first gentile child born on the Island.” The letter names fellow travelers on the same chartered crossing as “a Boyle family, Connaghans,” Sylvester McDonough and his wife, and possibly the Bonners, though Clementine could not recall whether five or seven families made the trip.

A September 1972 correction, which Clementine sent after an August 1972 retelling of the story overstated some details, gives the clearest surviving statement of Mary’s own parentage in her words: “James Napper Tandy Gallagher never came to Beaver Island. He drowned off shore at Arranmore before the family left there but his wife the ‘Granny’ of the song and his children Owen Gallagher and my grandmother Mary Gallagher McCauley passed the story on to their children’s children.” Mary’s youngest son, Owen — later Owen J. McCauley — married Clementine’s mother, Mary McDonough, in 1899, making Mary Gallagher McCauley the paternal grandmother of both Clementine McCauley and, through the couple’s oldest son Frank, Mary F. “Mamie” McCauley.

Evidence and limits

The September correction is the clearest held relationship statement: Mary was one of James’s children and the grandmother of Clementine. The March account supplies the migration and marriage context, but the family prose does not give dates, a marriage record, or a full list of children.
