History
In May 1973 the Beacon‘s “Beaver Tales” column, under the heading “The Adventures of Martha Miller,” reported that Martha signaled a Coast Guard helicopter after she and George Miller’s vehicle became stuck near Cheyenne Point.1 Not quite a year later, an April 1974 notice named Martha Miller as the contact for aspiring actors, actresses and production assistants for the Beaver Island Players’ summer productions, without naming a specific play or formal office.2
Significance
Both notices document ordinary community life — a roadside mishap and a volunteer theater recruitment — rather than any lasting achievement, but together with the cemetery record they establish a full lifespan for an otherwise briefly documented islander.

This record merges two episode articles the seeder minted from separate 1973 and 1974 newspaper appearances of “Martha Miller.” The bridge is the Holy Cross Cemetery index, which lists a single Martha M. (Hnatik) Miller (1914–1988) married to George Miller, combined with a 1970 Beacon notice (not otherwise used in this article) that independently identifies George and Martha Miller as a married Beaver Island couple — the same George Miller named in the 1973 Cheyenne Point episode. No second Martha Miller appears in the sources read here.
Open questions
- No source read here gives a maiden-name confirmation beyond the cemetery index’s “Hnatik,” or documents Martha Miller’s activities outside these two 1973–1974 episodes.
