Summary
John L. “Mickey” Malloy (1917–1974), a summer resident of Beaver Island for many years, was listed at Little Traverse Hospital in the July 1973 island hospital notes and died in Milwaukee in August 1974, two days after open-heart surgery.
Evidence and limits
His 1974 obituary gives his birth year, birthplace (Manistique), parents (“the late John Malloy and the former Kate Cull of Beaver Island”), his years in Pontiac, ownership of Christ Building Materials, Inc., and his family. The Holy Cross Cemetery index identifies his father as John “Monty” Malloy (1882–1932), a son of John P. “Buffalo” Malloy — making Mickey a grandson of Buffalo Malloy and the “nephew, John L. Malloy of St. James” named in the March 1973 obituary of Sister Mary Clare Malloy, his aunt. At least three generations of Malloy men named John are attested in the held record — Buffalo Malloy himself, his son “Monty,” and Mickey — with “Mickey” the nickname consistently used to distinguish the youngest from the other two.
A “John L. Malloy” signed a March 1974 letter to the St. James Township Board of Review protesting a tax assessment — see John L. Malloy. The matching full name and initial, and the overlapping timeframe with Mickey’s 1973 hospitalization and 1974 death, make this a plausible but unconfirmed identity match; the matching name and nickname make continuity between the 1973 hospital notice and the 1974 obituary probable, but this record is not merged with the tax-protest record or with other Malloy articles.
