History

During a three-day coyote hunt in December 1961, reported in the January 1962 issue, Frances LaFreniere stayed in radio contact with the hunters from her kitchen while the “modern safari” — equipped with citizens’ band radios and mechanized vehicles rather than dogs alone — worked the island; when islander Henrietta Crawford spotted a fifth coyote running through traffic on the King’s Highway, she telephoned Frances, who radioed the hunters, and Archie shot it. A year earlier, she and Archie had served the lunch at the Shamrock’s annual New Year’s Eve party. By December 1974 the Beacon credited its redesigned front-sheet artwork to “Mrs. Archie LaFreniere,” thanking Archie in the same notice.

Significance

The two source episodes — a 1961 coyote hunt and a 1974 newspaper redesign — are otherwise unrelated, and only the cemetery’s marital-name bridge and the repeated Archie-and-Frances pairing across 1961–1974 tie them to the same woman, illustrating how the Beacon’s habit of naming women only as “Mrs. [Husband’s name]” fragments a single subject across the newspaper record.

Evidence and limits

The Beacon never gives her first name directly; every attribution reads “Frances LaFreniere” or “Mrs. Archie LaFreniere.” The cemetery directory supplies her full name, parents, and life dates, and the repeated pairing with Archie at the same household and events across 1961–1974 corroborates the identity match. No source describes the cover artwork’s subject or medium, or gives an account of her life beyond these episodes.
