Summary

David Ray Himebaugh, son of Archie Himebaugh of Charlevoix, was engaged to Ruth Ellen Gregg of Beaver Island in May 1973 and married her at Holy Cross Church that September 22.12 He worked for Will Flow Company and was a co-leader of the island’s Boy Scout Troop 200 in the late 1970s.134 By 1999 he was living in Bay Shore, Michigan, and by 2007 in Petoskey, separately from Ruth, who was then listed under her birth surname.56

History

The Beacon announced David Ray Himebaugh’s engagement to Ruth Ellen Gregg in May 1973, identifying him as an employee of Will Flow Company and the son of Archie Himebaugh; the couple married at Holy Cross Church on September 22, 1973.12 A 2003 “thirty years ago” retrospective column independently confirms the wedding among that season’s noted weddings.7 He co-led Boy Scout Troop 200 with Bill Wagner and Phil Gregg on an overnight trip to Garden Island on February 4, 1977, and again led a Troop 200 weekend camp-out there with Joe Moore in early 1978.34 A May 1976 classified notice selling a motorcycle lists him reachable at Ruthie’s Bits of Beaver, a gift shop bearing his wife’s name.8 The couple’s daughter, Angela Hope, was born January 26, 1974, to “Mr. David Himebaugh of Bay Shore” and a second child, Michael Thomas, was born October 10, 1977.910 By March 1999 a grandchild’s birth notice again places him in Bay Shore, Michigan.5

A May 2007 Beacon birth notice for a great-grandchild of Phil and Lil Gregg lists the baby’s grandparents as “Robert and Ruth Mogford of Oden, Ruth Gregg of Charlevoix, and David Himebauch of Petoskey” — the mother, Angela Mogford, matches Angela Hope Himebaugh’s 1974 birth record by name and generation. By 2007, Ruth is listed separately, under her birth surname Gregg, and David separately, in Petoskey rather than Bay Shore, consistent with the marriage having ended by that date; no source read for this article states when or why.6

Evidence and limits

The newspaper accounts establish a reported wedding, two children, a Boy Scout leadership role, and a probable grandchild through daughter Angela, but not civil marriage, divorce, employment, or residency records. The February 1974 birth notice already places the family at “Bay Shore” rather than Beaver Island, and the 1977, 1999, and 2007 records are consistent with a mainland residence that moved from Bay Shore to Petoskey at some point before 2007; no source held here states when the family left the island or when, if at all, David Ray Himebaugh and Ruth Ellen Gregg’s marriage ended. The identification of “Angela Mogford” in the 2007 notice with Angela Hope Himebaugh born in 1974 rests on matching first name, the Gregg family connection, and plausible age, not a civil record.

One existing citation in this article did not check out against its apparent source: the Boy Scout Garden Island outing was previously dated to “October 1977,” but the primary account of that February 4 trip appears in the Beacon’s February 1977 issue, not October; the October 1977 issue contains only the unrelated Michael Thomas birth notice. This article now cites the February 1977 issue directly.
