This record merges two episode files seeded from separate newspaper notices — the 1974 snowmobile-race report and the 1975 graduation roster — because both name the same “son of Mr. and Mrs. William Welke.” A third, closely related record, Karl Welke (a single 1973 hospital notice spelling the name “Karl”), is treated here as very probably the same person on matching parentage and age, but is kept as its own file; see Evidence and limits.

History

Youth and school record

Welke was one of fifteen teenage members of the Beaver Island Flying Club his father led from January 1971, and appears the same year as a member of the island’s 4-H Flying Club, alongside his brother Mark, traveling to the Charlevoix County 4-H Spring Achievement Open House on April 25, 1970.¹ A March 1972 sports roster again lists “Mark and Carl Welke” together.² On January 27, 1974 he finished ninth in the island’s cross-country snowmobile race over an 8.3-mile course through the Font and Barney’s Lakes area. He graduated from Beaver Island Community School on May 23, 1975, one of six seniors that year.

Aviation training and career

By May 1975 Welke, then 18, held a private pilot rating and was working toward a commercial rating; the Beaver Beacon’s report on Welke Aviation, Inc.’s FAA operating certificate says he “plans to attend Aviation Technology School this fall to work toward Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic’s rating.” That August the paper reported he would begin Kirtland College’s Aviation Technology Branch in Grayling in January 1976, after his brother Mark finished the same course that fall. No source held here records directly whether he completed the program, but a January 1989 Beacon notice, on the Welke family’s purchase of the other half of Island Airways from Eric Hodgson, reports that “Carl Welke will continue to do maintenance at the Charlevoix Airport” — the latest dated record found of his career, and evidence that he went on to work as an aircraft mechanic in the family business.³

Marriage

On October 9, 1976, Welke served as best man at the Holy Cross Church wedding of his brother Mark to Lisa Fleischman; Lisa’s sister, Laura Fleischman, stood as maid of honor.⁴ Fifteen months later, on January 28, 1978, Carl Welke and Laura Fleishman were married themselves, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Muldoon in Rantoul, Illinois, with Mark Welke standing as his brother’s attendant; the notice gives the couple’s new address as 1814 Triangle Drive, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.⁵ No source held here records when the couple returned to the Beaver Island–Charlevoix area, though Carl Welke is again placed at the Charlevoix Airport by the 1989 Island Airways notice above.

Significance

No single notice about Carl Welke would establish more than a passing mention; strung together across nineteen years the Beacon’s record traces one island teenager through 4-H and a home-grown flying club into the family aviation business his parents built, and situates the Welke family’s generational hold on Island Airways and the Charlevoix airport ground crew.

Evidence and limits

Identity bridge for the merge. The February 1974 snowmobile-race report and the May–June 1975 graduation roster (“Carl Welke, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Welke”) both name the same parents, the same island family, and the same age range, and both are corroborated by the 1971 Flying Club roster, the 1970 4-H notice, and the 1972 team roster naming the same “Carl Welke” alongside brother Mark. No competing Carl Welke of matching age or parentage appears in any source read for this article, so the club/race/graduation episodes are treated as one person, not merged on the surname alone.

The name is spelled “Carl” in most notices found here — the 1971 club roster, the 1970 4-H item, the 1972 team roster, the 1974 race result, both 1975 aviation-training references, the 1975 graduation roster (which explicitly names him “son of Mr. and Mrs. William Welke”), and the 1976 and 1978 wedding notices. Only the September–October 1973 hospital notice spells it “Karl,” and that notice independently confirms the same parentage (“son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Welke”). Given the consistent spelling elsewhere, the matching parentage, and the fit with his age (16–18 across 1973–1975), the 1973 hospital patient is very probably the same person whose name the Beacon spelled inconsistently once, not a different Welke son — but that single episode is kept at Karl Welke as its own file rather than formally merged here, since it was seeded from a distinct notice and this merge batch covers only the snowmobile-race and graduation records. No source scan of the September–October 1973 issue beyond the held PDF was available to rule out a compositor’s error rather than editorial inconsistency; the finding is offered as probable, not certain.

A different, much younger Carl Welke appears in a June 2005 Beacon item as one of six Beaver Island Community School graduates that year — a birth year some three decades after this article’s subject. That record is not this person and is not used here; it is noted only as a caution against conflating the two by name alone, consistent with this island’s pattern of reusing given names across generations. A 1994 Beacon item names a “Karl Welke” in an informal recreational-football account; his age and context are not established, and he is not identified with this article’s subject either.
