C. Matthew “Matt” Melville (19 April 1890 – 5 May 1975) was Beaver Island’s golf professional for nearly two decades, credited by the Beaver Beacon with building and running the island’s nine-hole course from at least 1957 until his death, after which it was renamed in his memory. He had worked as a greenskeeper and traveling golf professional on the mainland for four decades before settling on the island.

History

Early career

Melville was born in Chicago on 19 April 1890. He came to Charlevoix in 1910 as greenskeeper and golf professional at the former Chicago Club Golf Course, left in 1911, and spent the following decades building golf courses in New York, Arizona and elsewhere while working as a traveling professional; for many years he was associated with the South Shore Golf Club in Chicago.1

Beaver Island golf course, 1957–1975

By December 1956 the Beacon described Melville as a “part-time Islander and ex-pro golfer,” recruited to guide a Mort Neff Michigan Outdoors television hunting party.2 The following February he was named to a Beaver Island Civic Association committee formed to respond to the Coast Guard’s planned withdrawal of telephone service.3 That winter, between golf seasons, he signed on as chief cook for Lawrence McDonough’s logging camp, which ran from 7 January to 15 March 1958 cutting timber that was later turned into croquet mallets on the island and finished in Grand Rapids – an off-season occupation distinct from his golf work.4 In October 1957 the Beacon reported a nine-hole course under construction on the farm islanders called “Big Tom’s,” under Melville’s direction, which he told the paper would be known as “Shamrock Hills Golf Course” — a working name that predates the club’s later identity as the Beaver Lodge Golf and Country Club.5 By September 1959 he was “fixing up a driving range at his place on the East Side Road,” inviting islanders to “buy a bucket of balls and whack away” and placing his home there.6 A June 1963 tournament preview, describing that year as the course’s “third year of operation,” places the start of regular play around 1960 or 1961, several years after construction began and before the club’s first documented tournament that same June.7

Through the 1960s and into the 1970s Melville worked as the course’s resident professional and groundskeeper — designing and rebuilding greens, including a new seventh hole planted with Toronto C-15 bentgrass in 1964, and hosting visits from mainland golf professionals such as Van Bacchine of the Evergreen Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.8 The Beaver Lodge Golf Club’s fuller committee and tournament history, including Melville’s role on its 1973 “Board of Governors,” is recorded on that article. Melville was hospitalized at Charlevoix Hospital in the fall of 1974 and again at the Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan that winter, where he wrote the Beacon in February 1975 to thank “all my many friends who have sent me cards, letters and gifts.”910 He died there on 5 May 1975, aged 85, after four months as a patient; his obituary called him “probably the eldest Golf Pro in the country” and said “the Beaver Island Golf Course will be a memorial to Matt’s efforts and skills” — a memorial the club took up formally within two years, operating under that name by June 1977.1

Personal life

Melville wintered away from the island in most years documented here — Ireland in 1961–62, staying near Limerick and boarding his dog with Father Louis, and Arizona in other years, including 1964, when the Beacon reported him spending “most the time on the golf links.”111213 He had married Theresa Connaghan, who predeceased him, and in January 1954 married the former Mrs. Irene LaFreniere, born Irene Boyle, who taught at St. Mary’s School and was his only survivor.11415

Evidence and limits

Melville’s career is documented almost entirely through Beaver Beacon items — hospital notes, seasonal-arrival items, golf-column reports and his 1975 obituary — rather than employment, course-ownership or club records. No source held here gives an exact date he settled permanently on Beaver Island between his 1911 departure from Charlevoix and his first named Beacon appearance in December 1956, or documents the 1957–1963 transition from “Shamrock Hills Golf Course” to “Beaver Lodge Golf and Country Club” by name.

Open questions
