Summary
Arthur J. “Lano” McCafferty (1923–1989) was a son of James A. Sr. and Elizabeth Tetzloff McCafferty of Beaver Island and a brother of John B. “Bing” McCafferty. Two Beaver Beacon birth notices, a year apart, record him as father to a daughter in January 1960 and to Laurel Louise McCafferty on January 27, 1961.
History
Arthur J. “Lano” McCafferty (1923–1989) appears twice in the Beacon’s birth notices: as father of an unnamed daughter born January 17, 1960, while the family was living in Rogers City, and as father of Laurel Louise McCafferty, born January 27, 1961, while the family was in St. James.
Significance
The record documents a McCafferty family of Beaver Island descent — son of James A. Sr. and Elizabeth Tetzloff McCafferty, brother of John B. “Bing” McCafferty — living off-island in Rogers City before returning to or maintaining ties with St. James by 1961.
Evidence and limits
The Holy Cross Cemetery index supplies Lano’s life dates and parents, and lists Bing and Donald R. McCafferty as brothers sharing the same parents, which is the basis for the sibling relation recorded here. The uncommon “Lano” nickname, paired with “Art” or “Arthur,” is the identity bridge across both birth notices: the February 1960 notice places the family in Rogers City, while the February 1961 notice places them in St. James, which is consistent with a family that moved or maintained residences in both places rather than evidence of two different men.
The 1961 notice calls Lano “the son of Mrs. Francis Mooney of St. James” rather than naming his mother as Elizabeth Tetzloff McCafferty. James A. Sr. McCafferty died in 1935, when Lano would have been about twelve; a widow remarrying and being referred to by her new husband’s name a quarter-century later is a plausible explanation, but no held source documents a remarriage, so the discrepancy is left open rather than resolved. Neither birth notice names Lano’s wife or the mother of either child, and the two records do not by themselves establish that both daughters share a mother.
Open questions
- Did Elizabeth Tetzloff McCafferty remarry a Mooney after 1935, explaining the “Mrs. Francis Mooney” reference?
- Who was Lano’s wife, and are the 1960 and 1961 daughters full sisters?
- What occupation or civil record documents Lano beyond these two birth notices?

Sources
- Lists Arthur J. "Lano" McCafferty (1923–1989), child of James A. Sr. and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Tetzloff McCafferty. The uncommon given-name/nickname pairing provides the identity bridge to both Beacon notices. It also lists brothers John B. "Bing" McCafferty (1922–1988) and Donald R. McCafferty (1934–2015), same parents, establishing the sibling group. It does not list a "Mrs. Francis Mooney" among his relations.
- Identifies Arthur “Lano” McCafferty as the father of Laurel Louise, born January 27, and as “the son of Mrs. Francis Mooney of St. James.” It does not name his wife or otherwise reconcile the mother reference with the cemetery record's James A. and Elizabeth Tetzloff McCafferty.data1 · beaver-island-archive · beaver_beacon · 1961-02_Beaver-Beacon

- Names "Mr. and Mrs. Art McCafferty (Lano) of Rogers City" as parents of a daughter born January 17, 1960 — a full year before the Laurel Louise notice and naming a different residence (Rogers City rather than St. James). The matching given name and parenthetical nickname identify the same man; the notice supplies no full identity, spouse name, or civil record.data1 · beaver-island-archive · beaver_beacon · 1960-02_Beaver-Beacon
