Summary

The Beaver Island Performing Arts Alliance (BIPAA) is the organization that produces the Baroque on Beaver Festival and promotes performing arts for the greater Beaver Island community. Its own festival programs document that it is a 2022 renaming of the Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association (BICAA), not a newly founded body: the 2022 program’s executive-director letter states “In 2022 we became the Beaver Island Performing Arts Alliance,” while that same program’s board letter is still headed “From The BICAA Chair.” By 2024 the festival’s board letter is headed “From The BIPAA Chair,” confirming the transition was complete.12

From BICAA to BIPAA

Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association (BICAA), formalized as a nonprofit corporation in 2006, sponsored Baroque on Beaver through at least the 2016 season (see Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association). BICAA’s own article, working from evidence available to it, treats any transfer of festival responsibility to BIPAA as undocumented and does not assert a rename. This article’s evidence is more specific: the festival’s own 2022 program, read directly, states in one voice (“we became”) that the producing organization renamed itself in 2022, while its board letter that same year still used the old chair title. That is direct, first-party evidence of a rename in progress, not a succession between two unrelated bodies – the basis recorded here for former_names: [Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association] and start_date: '2022'. It does not resolve BICAA’s own open question of what became of it in the years between its last dated Beacon/Courier mention (2016) and the 2022 rename; nothing read for this article documents that interval.

Producing Baroque on Beaver, 2022-2026

BIPAA has produced Baroque on Beaver in every season for which a program has been read: the 2022 twenty-first-anniversary season (27 July-6 August), the 2023 twenty-second season (“Nordling’s 14th season as Music Director”), the 2024 twenty-third season (25 July-3 August, with venues including the Community Center, Whiskey Point Lighthouse, Gillingham Auditorium, and the Beaver Island Studio & Gallery), the 2025 twenty-fourth season (24 July-2 August), and the 2026 twenty-fifth-anniversary season (23 July-2 August).13245

Robert Nordling has been music director throughout this period. mynorth.com reports that the 2026 season is billed as his last, after which he “passes the baton to Maestro Nathan Bieber.”6 No source read for this article gives a date for Nordling’s retirement announcement itself, only the succession as stated for the 2026 season.

An independently published Northern Islander announcement of the 2024 season, by Executive Director Matt Thomas, corroborates the program’s own account and adds detail: the 23rd season (July 25-August 3, 2024) was the first without an appearance by the Festival Chorus after longtime Choral Director Kevin Simons “moved on to other projects,” replaced by a vocal quartet that included island-connected soprano Martha Guth and her husband, bass Ricardo Lugo. Nordling is quoted describing a “World Premiere by Chicago composer Eric Malmquist” and the continuation of BIPAA’s Young Soloist Competition, whose winner performs with the Festival Orchestra.7

Community programming beyond the festival

A January 2024 Northern Islander article by Matt Thomas, headed “some facts that surprise,” documents BIPAA programming outside Baroque week: a Candlelit Christmas Concert on December 10, 2023 at the Community Center, followed the next day by a visit from five of the concert’s performers to the Beaver Island School for a question-and-answer session and a holiday singalong with the school’s youngest students – “It was a great opportunity for the kids,” said Principal Wil Cwikiel. The same article states BIPAA’s brass players performed at Jewell Gillespie Park before the fireworks at “the past two” Fourth of July celebrations (2022 and 2023), and that free events open to the public during Baroque week have included “Brass on the Grass” at Whiskey Point Lighthouse and the Donegal Bay Winds at the Beaver Island Studio & Gallery, with children under 15 admitted free to ticketed events when accompanied by a paying adult.8

Scope and limits

BIPAA’s own programs and website, together with independent Northern Islander coverage, establish its 2022 name change, its continuous production of Baroque on Beaver since then, at least two years of Fourth of July and Christmas-season community programming (2022-2023), and the 2026 Nordling-to-Bieber handoff. They do not establish an incorporation filing for either BICAA or BIPAA, a complete board history, or a full inventory of non-festival programming across every year.

Open questions

  • What documents, beyond the programs’ internal chair-title change, formally record BICAA’s 2022 renaming to BIPAA (articles of amendment, IRS determination letter, or similar)?
  • What did BICAA/BIPAA do between the last dated BICAA press mention (the December 2016 Charlevoix Courier grant report) and the 2022 rename?
  • When was Robert Nordling’s 2026 retirement announced, and what if anything is documented about Nathan Bieber’s prior role before becoming music director-designate?
  • Beyond the 2022-2023 Fourth of July and Christmas programming documented in the January 2024 Northern Islander article, what other non-festival programs has BIPAA produced in other years?
