Summary

Mabel E. Roy, 82, wife of A. J. Roy Sr., died 16 November 1974 at the Bloomfield Hills home of her daughter, Mrs. Byron (Arciel) Wyatt, roughly a month after she and her husband were injured in an automobile accident. The couple had returned to Beaver Island three days before her death to close their cottage for the season. A December 1974 obituary added detail on her civic and church affiliations and her 37-year business career; a February 1975 notice thanked islanders for their sympathy.

History

The November 1974 Beacon reported the death briefly, noting the earlier accident and that Roy had requested memorial contributions to the Beaver Island Christian Church in lieu of flowers. The following month’s issue printed what it called “a more detailed obituary,” identifying her as of Beaver Island and Bloomfield Hills, survived by four children (Donald, Richard, Arciel, and A. J. Roy Jr.), 13 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. It named her Secretary and Treasurer of the Beaver Island Historical Society, past president of the Blue Star Mothers in Pontiac, past Grand Chief of the Fanny E. Tompkins Temple No. 41 (Pythian Sisters), past president of the Knights of Pythias Recreation Center in Indian River, and a member of the Pine Hill Congregational Church of Orchard Lake as well as the Beaver Island Christian Church. It also identified her as co-owner and operator, with her husband, of Roy’s Replacement Parts and Service for 37 years before their retirement to the island, and widened the memorial request to include the Historical Society alongside the Christian Church.

In February 1975, the Beacon printed a thank-you from the family of Mrs. A. J. Roy for the prayers and sympathy shown by island friends after “the death of their mother.”

Evidence and limits

The articles do not provide a funeral, cemetery, civil death, accident, or completed-donation record. The spouse and children’s names are recorded because the December obituary states them directly; no further genealogy was traced.
