Summary

In September 2018, the Beaver Island Wildlife Club organized a campaign around concerns about chronic wasting disease and the effect of planned state restrictions on deer baiting and supplemental feeding. The Club sought deer heads for testing, asked residents not to transport unprocessed deer parts to the island, and said it was petitioning the DNR and state officials for an island-specific policy response.

Evidence limits

This record documents the Club’s public advocacy and intended testing effort. It does not establish the island herd’s disease status, the legal scope of the state rule, or the outcome of the Club’s request.

Sources

  1. After a reported meeting with the Michigan DNR, a participant encouraged residents to complete the state CWD survey and attend a Natural Resources Commission meeting. This documents local outreach and a reported DNR discussion, not a diagnosis, agency finding, or policy decision.

  2. The Club said it was working with the DNR and state legislator Tristan Cole to seek an island-specific exception to a planned January 2019 baiting/supplemental-feeding ban. It requested deer heads for testing, warned against transporting unprocessed deer parts to the island, and described letters to state officials. These are the Club’s advocacy claims and planned actions, not an independent finding that the herd was disease-free or that an exception was granted.
