Summary
The April 2006 Beaver Beacon published a Beaver Island Wildlife Club statement supporting management of double-crested cormorants. The statement described observed changes in local fish stocks, cited prior Beaver Archipelago and Great Lakes studies, and called for a rational and humane strategy rather than continued study alone. It also noted a March 28 Michigan Senate resolution calling for aggressive cormorant-control measures.
Evidence limits
This records a local advocacy position and the newspaper’s cited research; it does not establish cormorant causation, population totals, fishery collapse, or an adopted control program.
