Summary
During the winter of 1969, Karl Kuebler maintained feeding for Beaver Island’s wild turkeys. The Beacon later reported that only 26 turkeys could be accounted for in the island-wide winter coverage and that coyotes were considered partly responsible for losses. The April issue reported remains that Kuebler believed had been killed by a coyote, reinforcing the report’s concern about the reduced count.
Evidence and limits
The reports preserve observations and the suspected role of coyotes, but they do not establish a complete population count or a measured cause-of-decline study.
