Summary
The September 1967 Beaver Beacon reported severe tree defoliation on Beaver Island by saddled prominent caterpillars. State Forester Jack Lockwood said the insects had eaten nearly all leaves from an approximately 1,100-acre hardwood stand near French Bay and 50–80 percent of the leaves from a 1,400-acre stand inland from Oliver’s Point, while buds and beechnuts were developing normally.
