Summary

The September 2011 Beacon reports that Beaver Island was packed for its third Island Marathon. The October issue supplies the promised results: Joe Bolha ran 2:45:10 for a course record and led ten Boston Qualifiers; Rich Power set a 2:50:44 Masters record; and the marathon, half-marathon, walk, and 3.5-mile Harbor Run drew 204 participants in total.

Evidence limits

The newspaper report supplies a detailed results table and a total participant count, but not an independent audit of the field or a complete route survey.

Sources

  1. Chamber posts say registration had risen to more than 200, give the race director's 9 a.m. marathon and 11 a.m. half-marathon starts, and provide local event information. The later Beacon results remain the stronger source for the final 204-person total.

  2. A race organizer sought a child-sized wading pool to cool runners in case of hyperthermia. This documents contemporaneous safety preparation, not an incident or medical-outcome report.

  3. Beaver Beacon, September 2011, "The Third Island Marathon."
Reports that the Island was full for the third Marathon, with all beds taken and some participants sleeping on public benches or leaving by late-afternoon plane; it identifies the event as a final Boston Marathon qualifying opportunity and says complete results would appear the following month.
