Summary

The Beaver Beacon’s February 1993 issue announces, and its March 1993 issue reports the outcome of, a Clan-Na-Gael-organized parade and shopping cart race broadcast live by an off-island radio station, alongside a separately announced Holy Cross Altar Society dance at “the Hall.”

Program

A noon parade with entries from local businesses and horseback riders; a shopping cart race featuring stunts (jumping rope, leapfrog, hula-hooping, running through tires) with the winning team interviewed live on WLTO Radio of Harbor Springs, which broadcast from the Shamrock all afternoon; named judges (Emma Jean Belfy, Madonna McCafferty, Bonnie Keie, Pinky Harmon, Bev Walgus) and prize donors. Separately, per the February announcement: a Holy Cross Altar Society dance featuring the group “Anything Goes” at “the Hall” beginning at 8 p.m. with a late evening buffet.

Evidence limits

The February calendar and announcement give March 13 as the parade date, while the March outcome report gives “Saturday, March 12” for the same parade — this knowledge base preserves that one-day discrepancy as it appears in the two sources rather than silently resolving it. The organizing group is named explicitly as “Clan-Na-Gael” with four named organizers, but no organization article for that group exists here, so carried_out_by is left empty and the names are recorded in prose only. The Holy Cross Altar Society dance is only described in the February announcement; no outcome report for it was found in the March issue. The same February issue’s nostalgia reprint of the 1963 program is not treated as 1993 evidence — see the Evidence limits note under Sources.

Open questions

  • Does the March 12/13 date discrepancy reflect a schedule change between the announcement and the event, or an editorial error in one of the two issues?
  • What was the outcome of the Holy Cross Altar Society’s “Anything Goes” dance?

  5. Calendar: "Sat 3/13 St. Patrick's Celebration, Parade at 11 a.m., Party at the Hall at 8 p.m." and "Wed 3/17 'The Great Day' St. Patrick's Day." Announcement: "Plans are under way for the annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations on the Island, to be held Saturday, March 13. The day's schedule will include a parade and adult and kids' activities during the day in the downtown area. Holy Cross Altar Society will sponsor an evening dance featuring the group 'Anything Goes' at the Hall beginning at 8 p.m. with a late evening buffet; prices for this event will be \$8 per person or \$15 per couple." NOTE: the same issue's "ALSO IN THE FEBRUARY '63 BEAVER BEACON..." nostalgia column separately reprints the 1963 St. Patrick's Day program verbatim (Shamrock party with O'Mally's Band, Altar Society dinner, movie) as 30-years-ago retrospective content; that reprinted text describes 1963, not 1993, and is not used as 1993 evidence here — see event/beaver-island-st-patricks-day-1963.
