Summary

In “Is There a Shipwreck Out There?”, Mike Weede described a Beaver Island shipwreck research project that combined local testimony, published and archival research, Internet searching, boat-based surveys, drop-camera work, and diving. He wrote that the group had compiled about ten wrecks for detailed investigation and used a possible Baltimore wreck off Hog Island to illustrate how physical remains and location clues can support, but not by themselves settle, a wreck identification.

In a visitor Q&A, a participant identified a shallow wreck near Little Iron Ore Bay as the Bessie Smith, mentioned old dock cribs, and repeated a Baltimore wreck near Hog Island; another participant attributed narrower beaches to high water. These are later community recollections and visitor advice, not an archaeological survey, coordinate record, or independent confirmation of the identities or locations.
