Summary

The December 2012 Beaver Beacon’s “One Hundred Years Ago” column recounts contemporary December 1912 reports that the schooner Rouse Simmons, owned by a St. James, Beaver Island owner, disappeared after sailing from Thompson with a cargo of Christmas trees. Wreckage, washed-up trees, and a bottle containing a final message later confirmed the loss.

This record preserves a later reprinting of contemporary newspaper reports. The issue contains varying historical estimates of the vessel’s tonnage and crew size, so it does not resolve those discrepancies.
