Summary

Fourteen cars took part in Beaver Island’s road rally on Sunday, February 14, 1993. Teams followed 23 clues based on the island’s history and geography, completed scavenger tasks, and raised proceeds for the Harriet Fund.

History

Cindy Gillespie and Tom Cole organized the rally. The winning team, made up of Phil and Joanie Becker, Loretta Slater, Colleen Martin, Karen Wogan, and Shelly Hayes, finished in 3 hours and 54 minutes. The organizers added 30 minutes because the team failed to solve a clue leading to Shelly Hayes’s own house. The second-place team finished one minute behind the adjusted winning time.

The rally’s clues required teams to use local knowledge rather than simply follow a marked course. In addition to solving the 23 clues, teams wrote a song and found an Irish tea bag, a swimsuit, a Polaroid photograph of their team in front of their vehicle, a size 13 boot, and a metal nail file. The Beacon describes the event as a success and says proceeds went to the Harriet Fund to help with Harriet Rafferty’s medical expenses.

Evidence and limits

The report establishes the date, participation count, tasks, organizers, and charitable destination. It does not preserve the clue text, a route map, the starting point, or a direct connection to the Blue Trail or the South End Lighthouse. The event belongs in the broader south-end rally story because other rally reports explicitly describe routes reaching the island’s south end.
