In June 2017, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources solicited public comments on a proposal, required by Public Act 288 of 2016, to open northern Lower Peninsula state forest roads to off-road vehicles beginning in 2018 unless particular roads were closed for safety, user-conflict, or environmental reasons.
