Summary

The Beaver Island Music Festival’s sixth held edition ran July 18-19, 2008, on the same woods property as prior years. Advertisements for this year are the first held to print the tagline “Since 2003” and “The Original Out in the Woods, Rain or Shine,” and a July 2008 ad carries the fullest surviving hour-by-hour schedule of any year known.12

Program

The announced lineup was: Whitey Morgan, Back Forty, Dirt Road Logic, D’Carlo, Goldmine Pickers, Pinky Lee/Josh-N-Me, Lake Effect, Sowa Brothers, Winter/Sessions (listed elsewhere in the ad as “Winter Session”), MJ Bishop, Dynasorrows, and Shifting Souls.1

The July 2008 ad gives a full printed schedule. Friday, July 18: camping passes available after 10 a.m., festival gates open at 4 p.m., music 5:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. – Dynasorrows (5:30-6:15), Winter Session (6:30-7:30), Shifting Souls (7:45-8:30), Goldmine Pickers (8:45-10:00), Whitey Morgan (10:15-11:15), Lake Effect (11:30-12:15), Dirt Road Logic (12:30-1:30 a.m.). Saturday, July 19: gates open at noon, music 1 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. – an open-performer slot from 1:00-3:00 p.m. (“please sign up in advance with our sound personnel to reserve your chance to perform”), MJ Bishop (3:00-4:00), Pinky Lee/Josh & Me (4:15-5:00), Whitey Morgan (5:15-6:15), Winter Session (6:30-7:30), Dynasorrows (7:45-9:00), DCarlo (9:15-10:15), Sowa Brothers (10:30-11:45), Back Forty (12:00-1:30 a.m.). The ad notes “post show campfire music both nights, bring an instrument or just enjoy.”2

Evidence limits

Both held 2008 sources are advance advertisements, not a post-event report; no 2008 or early-2009 issue read for this article describes what actually happened at the festival, confirms attendance, or reports fundraising totals for this year specifically. The “Since 2003” tagline is treated here as the festival’s own contemporaneous statement of its founding year, which corroborates – but does not independently prove beyond the festival’s own claim – the 2003 origin recorded on the hub article.

Open questions

  • No post-event recap for 2008 is known to survive (the next detailed recap held is for 2009, in the March 2009 newsletter). Does a later 2008 or early-2009 issue not read for this article report on the actual event?
  • Ticket prices for 2008 were not found in the sources read; the ad directs pricing questions to BIMF.net or by phone rather than printing them.
