Summary

The Beaver Island Music Festival’s third held edition ran July 22-23, 2005, on the Burton family property. A festival poster was reproduced across three Beacon issues (April, May, and June 2005), and a July 2005 item describes an associated fundraising raffle. This is the earliest year for which the Beacon corpus preserves poster text naming a lineup in detail, and it is also the year that most clearly illustrates a recurring problem: the poster survives only as OCR and as AI-generated image captions, and the three renderings of it disagree with each other in details.1234

Program

The most literal rendering – OCR’d as running plain text rather than an image caption, in the June 2005 issue – reads: “Danny & Carol Burton Present BEAVER ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL JULY 22ND & 23RD 2005 simplicity * glowb * d’carlo prisoners of paradise (featuring Victor De Lorenzo of the Violent Femmes) ed palmer & friends * beans david molinari band * mike moran LLE * ernie douglas * soma bros. PLUS MANY MORE ACTS TO BE ANNOUNCED.”2

Two other issues (April and May 2005) reproduce the same poster as an image, captioned by automated image description rather than transcribed. Those captions list overlapping but not identical acts – “bump” and “combine,” “lumbard & lloyd,” “chern,” and “the violators” appear only in the April caption, and the guitarist featured with Prisoners of Paradise is rendered as “Victor De Loreto” (April/May captions) versus “Victor De Lorenzo” (June OCR text) – both of which differ from the real Violent Femmes drummer’s name, Victor DeLorenzo. None of these three renderings should be treated as a verified transcription of the printed poster.342

A fundraising raffle was held at the festival, sponsored by the festival itself, McDonough’s Market, and the Beaver Island Boat Company, benefiting Beaver Island EMS. Prizes included a 3-foot-by-12-foot banner signed by all performing artists (raffled at midnight on July 23), festival T-shirts, and signed festival posters, one per performing group.1

Evidence limits

No source read for this article reports attendance or which acts actually performed versus were only advertised (“plus many more acts to be announced”). The poster’s exact wording is unverified against the printed original – all three held renderings are secondary artifacts (OCR and AI-generated captions of a scanned image), not a direct transcription, and they disagree with each other on at least the “bump”/“glowb” act name and the featured guitarist’s surname. No post-event recap for 2005 was found in this or later 2005 issues read for this article.

Open questions

  • What was actually printed on the poster? The three held renderings (April caption, May caption, June OCR text) disagree and none has been checked against the source scan image directly for this article.
  • Which “more acts to be announced” beyond those printed on the poster ultimately performed?
  • No ticket price was found for 2005, unlike the 2004 ($8/day, $15/weekend) and 2009 (itemized table) editions.
